How To Volunteer

Health Professionals

If you are a licensed health professional interested in donating your time and skills to the health and well-being of the underserved in San Diego County, we wholeheartedly welcome your participation. Some of our volunteer dentists come as often as once a week, while others come once every few months. The majority of our volunteer faculty attends at the clinic once a month. We are appreciative of any commitment that you can make. All attendings at the Free Clinic Project must be or become members of the salaried or voluntary faculty of UCSD School of Medicine. If you would like to become a member of the voluntary faculty, are already a member and would like to sign up or if you would like additional information, please contact Dr. Sussi Yamaguchi at [email protected].

Pre-Dental Students

Before volunteering in our dental clinics, you’ll need to complete five requirements: CPR Certification, Paperwork, Infection Control certification, Kits, and Photo badge. We suggest starting with CPR certification and paperwork first, since UCSD HR approval can take time. Then you can complete Infection Control certification. Finally, you can pick up your kit and photo badge. Following this order will help make the process smoother and ensure you’re ready to begin volunteering with minimum delays.

CPR Certification

Completion of a CPR-BLS course is required prior to submitting the volunteer application. You may fulfill this requirement through an external provider. If you wish to complete the course with PDS, please contact the CPR Coordinator at [email protected]. The course fee is $39.00 and sessions are held on the third Saturday of each month of each quarter at UCSD campus.

Paperwork

Please complete the application and submit it to Paperwork Coordinator Titania via email [email protected].  Please submit a photo of yourself on a plain background with your volunteer application.

***Important note, the UCSD LiveScan Office is currently closed until further notice.  Please do not contact the Live Scan Office or attempt to schedule an appointment at this time.  During this time, you can be approved for volunteering within our clinics without a LiveScan so long as you submit all other paperwork to the Volunteer Paperwork Coordinator.  When the LiveScan Office re-opens, please schedule an appointment with them to complete the service.  Updates regarding the status of the UCSD LiveScan Office will be sent via email through the PDS Listserv.  Again, please do not contact the Live Scan Office or attempt to schedule an appointment at this time.

If you have any questions regarding the application, please contact Titania at [email protected]. You do not have to be a UCSD student to volunteer at our clinics, however you are not allowed to volunteer in clinic until you have been approved and have received proper training through the UCSD Student-Run Free Dental Clinics. We encourage that you attend our organizational meetings for more information about volunteering.
